Space For Good

Ep. 04 - Maldives' Climate Change Reality

A Space for the Maldives?

In the fourth episode of Space for Good, hosted by Emma Gatti, editor-in-chief of SpaceWatch Global, we hear from Madin Maseeh, the president of the Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO). Joined by Mani Thiru, expert on the Asia-Pacific space technology landscape, the speakers discuss the importance of space technology for tackling the climate crisis.

Madin highlights a crucial misconception: while the Maldives is undeniably threatened by rising sea levels, this is not the most pressing issue. More immediate dangers include storm surges, heavy rain and wind, tidal waves, and ground instability. These factors are already affecting the livelihoods of Maldivians. He explains that rising sea surface temperatures are also contributing to the death of coral reefs, which are vital to the Maldives' ecosystem and provide sustenance for its people.

The Maldives' geographical location makes it a crucial player in monitoring and predicting global weather patterns, Madin argues. The country acts as a bellwether for India, as the monsoon season begins near the Maldives. Cyclones often originate in the area, and data collected there can be used to predict weather events in India and beyond. This makes the Maldives a "vanguard in the fight against climate change", as protecting the island nation ultimately contributes to global climate resilience.
